SENTINEL JIU-JITSU

BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU CLUB IN CHESSINGTON

We work hard on the mats, respect one another,
support each other’s progress and make everyone
feel part of the team from day one.

Everyone starts somewhere

We’re a local Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu club based at St. Mary’s Centre, Chessington, just minutes from Surbiton, Tolworth, Epsom, and Kingston.

Our members are a vibrant mix of complete beginners, experienced grapplers, and everyone in between. Most of us started with zero martial arts background — so we know exactly how it feels to walk into a class for the first time.

Training here is beautifully simple: we work hard, we respect each other, and we help each other improve. The sessions can be tough, but they’re always rewarding, and there’s plenty of laughter along the way.

Community-first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Supportive and motivating environment

Train with people who genuinely care about your progress. Your victories are celebrated, your struggles understood, your potential never doubted.

Positive mental health

Boost confidence, reduce stress, and feel genuinely great about yourself. Know you can handle pressure and push through when things get tough.

Fitness + skills

Get stronger, faster, and more capable while mastering something meaningful. Real strength alongside practical skills that last a lifetime.

Neurodiverse-friendly

We celebrate different learning styles and abilities because diversity makes us stronger. Your unique way of learning is valued here.

Self-improvement

Build discipline, focus, and resilience that transforms how you show up everywhere. The confidence you develop on the mats follows you home.

Community first

You’re not just joining a gym, you’re joining a team that becomes family. Friendships forged here extend far beyond training.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the chess match and physical challenge rolled into one. It’s about technique, leverage, and staying calm under pressure, not size or strength.

What BJJ actually does for you

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu isn’t just a martial art — it’s a complete transformation system that gets you fitter, stronger, and more confident while learning something truly practical.

Real self-defence skills

Learn to control and neutralise bigger, stronger opponents through technique, not brute force. It’s empowering to know you have the skills to protect yourself and those you care about.

Full-body workout

Experience strength, cardio, flexibility, and balance all in one incredible session. Every muscle gets worked, every movement has purpose, and you’ll leave feeling accomplished.

Problem-solving on the mats

BJJ sharpens your mind as much as your body. You’ll learn to think three moves ahead, adapt under pressure, and find solutions when the stakes feel high.

Community

Your training partners become your teammates, and often your closest friends. The bonds formed through shared challenges and mutual respect are unlike anything else.

Your first time
on the mats

When you arrive, we’ll greet you warmly, introduce you to your coach, and show you around. You’ll meet a few friendly faces, see the mats, and start to feel at home before you even step onto them.

We’ll get straight into learning — the techniques might look challenging at first, but we’ll break them down step by step so you can start making them work for you right away. There’s no intimidation here, just patient guidance.

From day one, you’ll be working with training partners. BJJ is a close-contact martial art, and that’s part of what makes it so effective and bonding. There’s plenty of contact, but it’s always controlled, respectful, and focused on keeping you safe while you learn.

Every technique can be adapted to your body, experience, and comfort level. You’ll be learning, experimenting, and sometimes even laughing as you figure it out together with your new teammates.

At the end of your first class, you’ll know:

Exactly what a BJJ class feels like
You’ve sweated, smiled and survived
That you CAN do this — even if it looked impossible at first
And maybe… that you can’t wait for the next one!

Who you’ll be training with

You’ll be learning from Ed Shemming, our black belt instructor who’s been doing this for over a decade.

Ed’s the kind of coach who gets that everyone learns differently; he’ll break things down as many times as you need until it makes sense. He’s got a wicked kimura, but more importantly, he’s got endless patience and genuinely wants to see you succeed.

But also, you’ll meet…
Parents training with their teens
People from all walks of life united by the desire to grow and improve
People starting martial arts for the first time in their 30s, 40s, or later
Anyone who values fun, respectful, and rewarding training over high-pressure competition
